Celebrating Presidents’ Day in Northern Michigan

Presidents’ Day is Monday which mean lots of folks have a three-day weekend coming. It falls right smack in the middle of winter. In Northern Michigan, that means plenty of snow for winter fun.

Many people will head up north to hit the slopes this weekend. At Nub’s Nob they’re open for night skiing this Friday through Sunday. They actually close their 53 runs for a bit in the afternoon to re-groom them and make sure they’re in perfect shape for evening use. You can ski until 10pm this holiday weekend. You can also score a great deal at their Demo Ski Sale Sunday morning.

Boyne Highlands is offering a Ski & Stay Three Day Package for Presidents’ Week, Feb. 20 – 24. You’ll get a three night stay, three open-to-close lift tickets and a breakfast buffet every morning for just $259 a person. Of course, you’ll also have use of their heated pool, hot tub and access to their award winning ski terrain.

Boyne Mountain is offering a similar Ski & Stay Three Day Package, Feb. 20 – 24, as well. They’re also celebrating Presidents’ Day with a fireworks show and torchlight parade on Saturday night. The Summit-to-Stein’s Snowshoe Dinner is another special event happening there this weekend. You’ll ride the Hemlock ski lift to the top and stop in at the Eagle’s Nest to warm up and pick up your snowshoe gear. Then you’ll take a twilight hike through the snow-covered forest with a rest stop at a bonfire. Your final destination is Stein Eriksen’s where you’ll sit down to a three-course dinner.

There’s plenty of other winter fun happening in Northern Michigan this weekend as well. The Birchwood Country Club in Harbor Springs is hosting a Chili Cook-off from noon to 3pm on Sunday. Admission gets you unlimited chili samples. If you make a mean pot of chili, you’re welcome to compete.

Boyne City is holding their Winterfest this weekend. You’ll find activities for the whole family. Try your hand at making a snow sculpture and compete for first place. Kids can play games like the Frozen Fish Toss. Sleigh rides are offered at Old City Park, and the Wine Emporium is holding a wine tasting.

Petoskey hosts their Winter Carnival this Thursday through Sunday. Friday is the Chocoholic Frolic. Tour the downtown stores and be treated to chocolate at each stop! All kinds of events are taking place Saturday at the Winter Sports Park, including including hockey, curling, sledding and figure skating. Downtown you can participate in a 5K, try your hand at broomball and watch ice sculptures being created. Sunday is all about the kids with snowshoeing lessons and a snowman building contest as well as other carnival activities in Pennsylvania Park.
