National Waffle Iron Day August 24th + Waffle Iron Hash Browns

August 21, 2017

IAugust 24th is National Waffle Iron Day and we are celebrating our love of waffles by sharing delicious, homemade sweet and savory waffle recipes! Waffles are delicious and normally toted as breakfast food but your waffle iron can cook more than waffles. Have you ever tried scrambled eggs or hash browns? Even corn beef hash! We love our waffle iron and I love using it to make foods other than actual waffles.

This past weekend my husband was off from work and we decided to do breakfast together as a family. We usually do pancakes or french toast and occasionally eggs and toast. The kids love hash browns and were bugging for them so I decided to try them out in the waffle iron. I’d seen a few tutorials on how to here and there and Pinterest and I thought to myself, how hard could it be? I happened to have a frozen bag of shredded hash browns in the freezer and decided to give it a try!

Waffle Iron Hash Browns

Ingredients:

  • Frozen shredded hash browns
  • Salt & pepper
  • ketchup or other sauce (optional)

Directions:

  1. Plug-in your waffle iron and spray with non-stick cooking spray, if needed. Sometimes I do like to spray my waffle iron because after a few uses I feel stuff starts to stick.
  2. After the waffle iron is heated, add the shredded hash browns. I like to make my layer at least 1″ thick because once you close the waffle iron, they layer is patted down so less is more.
  3. Allow the shredded hash browns to heat through. I love mine golden brown and pretty crispy so I let mine cook about 10 minutes. I checked it every few minutes to make sure they weren’t burning.
  4. Remove the cooked hash browns from the waffle iron and serve.

I love making hash browns this way because it allowed me to make our eggs and other breakfast food items separately. Plus, it saved on dirtying extra dishes. Having a waffle iron is a space saver too if you don’t have a lot of kitchen space and want an appliance to do duty double.
