Fordite, or Motor Agate, is known for it’s fun patterns and colors. These unique ‘rocks’ are an accidental byproduct of automotive factories hand spray-painting the cars. The oversprayed paint built up on the tracks heating and cooling with the cars until it had to be scraped off and removed. Some workers noticed how beautiful the byproduct was and soon rock hunters were after it, too. Now, car hand spray-painting (and Fordite production) is a thing of the past, but polished pieces and interesting jewelry can still remind us of Michigan’s rich automotive history.
