COVID-19: Tips for Staying Healthy and Fit
Many of us are at home practicing social distancing and trying to stay healthy during COVID-19. Part of staying healthy is getting physical. Sitting around too long is not good for your body or mind. We want everyone to stay healthy, so below are a few ideas to get you moving, grooving, and having fun.
Take a Hike: This is an excellent opportunity to breathe in some fresh air, get some physical exercise, explore a new nature trail, and turn exercise into education. You can make this an opportunity to learn about science and the great outdoors. You can learn about the trees that are native to this area, what animals habitat the region, and how plants and trees provide oxygen for our planet. This is a great hands-on way to help kids learn about nature and keep their brains and body stimulated and learning.
Family Workout: Being stuck inside for too long can start to wear on a person. Physical exercise can improve your mind, body, and attitude. Working out doesn’t have to be a drag; it can be a fun family activity. If your family is competitive like mine is, any event can be turned into a fun competition. We enjoy playing a game of basketball at home, seeing who can run around the house the quickest, who can do the most sit-ups in a minute, who can shoot the most baskets in a minute, and the list goes on and on. Another fun option for families that are less competitive but want to get moving is the deck of doom or dice game. Little kids especially enjoy the dice game. It’s simple, pick the workout that your family member must perform, and whatever number the dice lands on is the repetition that has to be completed. It makes for a good work out and lots of giggles.
Learn Some New Moves: Dancing is another fun way to get moving, laugh, and spend time together. Tik Tok is the new craze for kids right now. Making a short, private video as a family is a great way to pass the time, as well as playing Wii Dance, learning a new dance, or just putting on your favorite tune and wiggling around the house. These all provide a physical outlet that is an excellent way to bond, laugh, and get some exercise.
Virtual Workouts: Many gyms have been shut down due to the COVID-19 but have been kind enough to post daily workouts or host a virtual class. You can check out the virtual Pilates events at the Original Work Studio, or check out Crossfit Petoskey; they are posting daily at-home workouts on their Instagram. There are places like Planet Fitness and Fitness blender who are also offering virtual workout videos to stay in shape during your stay at home.
