Family Game Night

Family Game Night

This week marks the first major school break due to the holiday season and Thanksgiving is just days away. The school week is shortened for those needing to travel and we have the opportunity to spend some extra quality time with the kiddos. Our family doesn’t usually travel for holidays, so we will have some extra time yelling, errrr, having good old fashioned family fun with the kids.

My 4, 5 and 6 year old LOVE having days off from school but tend to get really restless during breaks. Yes, they play outside and they do several extracurricular activities throughout the week but being home over holiday breaks can get very stressful for us all. I try to keep them busy and keep my sanity at the same time but sometimes it’s overwhelming.

Enter Family Game Night! Our kiddos are still young, but we always have a good time bringing out the classics: Candyland, Chutes and Ladders and Hi Ho Cherrio and other more ‘toddler’ friendly games when they are climbing the walls and want my attention. I work from home so I’m often tucked away in our office working on something, but they really do love the games and it’s actually fun to take some time off from working and hiding in the office all day and decompress with them. My husband isn’t much of a game player (I had to bribe him with baked goods for the photo above) but he will humor us and I think he secretly enjoys it.

Family Game Night Ideas

If your kiddos are older, why not introduce some classic games? Chess and checkers are always a fun go too, even Dominos. With so many kids being caught up with technology, social media and various gaming devices introducing a fun, classic game is sure to change up your family game night where everyone can have fun, talk about their day and enjoy each other’s company. I think every kid should learn to play these very basic but fun games. They’re classic.

My kiddos are still to young to understand how Dominos really work but they LOVE to line them up. It’s the perfect rainy or snowy day activity. They love to have contests to see who can make the longest chain without it falling and then tipping them over is the best part!

Don’t have nay games at home to play or just board with them? Try making your own game! With almost every kiddo loving Legos check out this fun DIY game for kids using Legos. Feeling more adventurous? Try your hand at making a homemade board game for your family that is about your family!
