Five Favorite Summer Shish-kabob Secrets

Shish Kebob 5 Secrets

As summer and warmer weather arrive, before any yard clean up happens, our first priority is to get that grill BBQ-ready! From the time the snow melts until the snow returns, our family practically eats every dinner from the grill. And one of our BBQ favorites is Shish-kabobs!

Whether grilling for yourself, your family, or backyard party, shish-kabobs are an easy crowd pleaser with just a little prep work.

Here are my Five Favorite Summer Shish-kabob Secrets:

1. Prepping and picking your skewers.

A good shish-kabob starts with a good skewer! And there are plenty of different kinds of skewers to pick from. Bamboo skewers are the most inexpensive and easiest to find, but be sure to soak them in warm water for a minimum of 30 minutes before using or else they will catch fire!

If you catch the “kebob bug” and find yourself grilling them more often, stainless steel skewers are a worthwhile investment. They require no prep work and can be reused time and time again.

TIP: If you have younger kids and are worried about them poking themselves with the skewer, just clip the end off the bamboo skewer before serving!

2. Everyone’s Kabobs!

Shish Kebob

Our favorite thing about shish-kabobs is that everyone creates their own based on what they like! Simply pre-cut meat (marinated or not), veggies and fruits into chunks and set them out in dishes. Guests (and especially kids) will love assembling their favorite combinations! And you won’t have to worry about any going to waste!

3. Spacing and Rotating.

How you space the goodies on your shish-kabobs is a total personal preference. Some people like to keep the meat and veggies spaced out to cook evenly. But I like to load my meat and veggies on together so the veggies can help add a little more flavor to the meat as it cooks. So good! Either way, rotate the skewers and rotate them often!

4. No-Grill Kabobs.

Wait? Didn’t I just tell you how much I LOVE grilling kabobs? Yes, but this is another option for those days where it’s just too hot to grill or you just need to switch things up. Using your skewers, create shish-kabobs using your favorite lunch meats, cheese, and raw veggies (the ones you actually enjoy eating raw).  These No-Grill Kabobs make great lunches and sandwich alternatives, and kids will love them!

5. Kabobs for dessert!

This is the best part about kabobs….dessert! Continue the kabob fun with shish-kabob desserts! Load up those skewers with your favorite fruits and pieces of angle food cake. If you want a little more bit of sweetness, add some marshmallows to the skewers or offer some whipped cream for dipping.

Now that I’ve enticed you with some shish-kabob goodness, go forth and BBQ! Be creative and have a fabulous Summer!
