Five Haunted Places Along Lake Michigan
It’s Halloween, and if you’re looking for a place to get your scream on, we have plenty of them right along the shores of Lake Michigan. Whether you believe in ghosts or just like exploring creepy, old buildings, we’re sure these spooky spots will make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end.
1. Felt Mansion: Let’s start down on the southern end of the Big Lake in Saugatuck, MI. The original owner, Dorr Felt, built the mansion for his wife in 1928. Sadly Agnes passed away not long after moving in. Her husband died just three years later. Now open to the public for historic tours, many believe that the ghost of Agnes still resides in the house. Doors mysteriously open and close on their own. Visitors claim to have seen an apparition dancing in the ballroom, and some even say Agnes picks on visitors she doesn’t like.
2. Traverse City State Hospital: Farther north in Traverse City you’ll find the State Hospital. With it’s disturbing history, it’s no wonder this building that’s over a hundred years old is reportedly filled with bizarre activity. First a mental asylum, it also sheltered tuberculosis, typhoid, diphtheria, and polio patients. A glimpse at the underground tunnels and caged balconies will give even the most stoic an unsettled feeling.
3. Terrace Inn: Next we’ll drive about an hour and a half north to Petoskey, our hometown and home to the Terrace Inn. This place has had so much unexplained activity that it actually has a Ghost File detailing all the unsettling events within its walls. Look for the Lady in White wandering the halls and rooms, the Man in Tweed on the balcony and a young teenage boy who haunts the basement.
4. The Grand Hotel: In between the Lower and Upper Peninsulas, Mackinac Island draws visitors from all over the world. Apparently it also attracts spectors from another dimension. The famous Grand Hotel sits on the site of an old military burial ground. Soldiers reportedly wander the hotel’s theater. Other spooky places on the island include Fort Mackinac and Mission Point.
5. Seul Choix Point Lighthouse: The last stop on our haunted Lake Michigan tour takes us over the Mackinac Bridge to the western side of the Upper Peninsula. The Seul Choix Point Lighthouse is in Gulliver, Michigan. Visitors to the lighthouse claim to have seen silverware moved, heard footsteps on the stairs and even smelled cigar smoke. Some believe a ghostly lighthouse keeper still works there.
