National Donut Day and Johan’s Pastry Shop

June 18, 2018

If you are from the Petoskey area or have driven through at some point in time, you are probably aware of Petoskey’s well-known donut shop: Johan’s Bakery. Located at 565 West Mitchell coming into downtown Petoskey, Johan’s carries a wide variety of homemade donuts, as well as cakes, cookies and other sweet treats. Everything is made in house daily and served fresh. Johan’s has been a Petoskey, Harbor Springs and Village of Walloon tradition (during the summer months), for quite some time now.

June 1st was National Donut Day and my kids love Johan’s and will make up any excuse they can to stop by for a donut and juice. We try to go at least once a month, more so during the summer when my husband is on nights. The kids have their favorites as do I. And regardless of what your favorite is a hot fresh cup of coffee washes it down perfectly. If you can’t make it into the bakery on W. Mitchell in Petoskey, Harbor Springs or Walloon, don’t fret. Other local establishments such at Mitchell Market in downtown Petoskey (the old 7-11) and Johan’s Burger Express over on M-119 also carry Johan’s donuts which are dropped off daily.

The kids were bugging to go to Johan’s last week so it was the perfect opportunity to stop in and chat with the employees about their delicious pastries. Clayton Brown, the owner, was busy in the back deep frying some golden delicious donuts while Mike Green was turning out fresh made dough for donuts. The smell alone had me thinking of ordering a second donut before I left the shop.

I asked the Clayton and his employees what their favorite donuts and/or pastries were as well as what are the most popular sweets that customers request.

Q: What are the most popular donuts request by customers?

A: Glazed old fashioned, glazed cinnamon, maple cinnamon and apple fritters.

Staff Favorites:

  • Mike: Old fashioned glazed
  • Chris: Apple fritter
  • Todd: Any jelly donut
  • Julia: Homemade donut hole dipped in powdered sugar
  • Robin: Chocolate and blueberry
  • Clayton: Cherry danish
