Northern Michigan Animal Shelters

May 2, 2016

Spring is finally here and the weather is starting to get warmer here in Northern Michigan. My family and I have been outside the last few weeks enjoying the warmer temperatures every chance we get. Even my oldest ‘daughter’ has gotten in on the action. When I refer to my oldest kiddo, I’m speaking of our German Shorthair Charlie. She will be 10 years old this July and loves nothing more than running as fast as she can and chasing after Chuck It! balls on our property.

Animals have always been near and dear to my heart. Having grown up on a 100 acre farm over in Indian River, we always had horses, geese, chickens, cats and of course, dogs! We even had a baby fawn when I was younger. After the fawns mother had been hit by a car, the local DNR agency asked my father if he would take care of it. We even named her Bambi! She lived with us for over a year and even after becoming ad adult, she would still come back and visit and would even approach my sister.

Growing up, I could always be found outside with one of the animals or out horseback riding on our property. To this day, I adore animals and my husband teases me that I’d be a crazy dog lady if he didn’t keep me in check and I will admit, he’s probably right.

If you are an animal lover like me, now is a great time to get a pet, if you’ve been considering one. The weather is getting warmer and it’s a great time of year to adopt a new pet and have it potty trained by summer. Although we didn’t adopt Charlie from a local shelter, growing up, it was the place we would get our cats and dogs.

You might already be a pet parent. What to do with your fur baby?

Ridge Run Dog Park, Boyne City, MI – This dog friendly park is a great place to take your fur baby if you live here in Northern Michigan or you’re just visiting. They have lots of dog friendly toys for the ‘kids’ to play with and they can socialize with other dogs and you can meet some other pet parents that love their babies as much as you do.

Want to know more about Ridge Run Dog Park? Check out the post I did on it last year, here.

Although Petoskey doesn’t have an actual dog park, we still have lots of walking trails that your fur baby will love!
