Seven Things to Do During Spring Break in Michigan
Spring break is just around the corner for many of you. If you have time off in March or April, you don’t have to head south to enjoy your vacation. There’s plenty to do right here in Michigan.
1 If skiing is your thing, you can hit the slopes for spring break. Ski season in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula runs well into mid-April. As long as temperatures are cool enough, resorts can make their own snow. Even if Mother Nature isn’t making her own. Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands and Nubs Nob are all close to Petoskey. Book a cozy room at one of the resorts to close out the winter. When you aren’t racing downhill, head into Petoskey where you’ll find one-of-a-kind shopping and dining experiences.
2 Maybe you long for a tropical getaway, but can’t make it down to Florida. Don’t worry! Our indoor water parks are the next best thing. It’s always 82 degrees inside and the water is fine! Avalanche Bay is located at Boyne Mountain Resort where you can have the best of both worlds, swimming and skiing! Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City is another large indoor waterpark resort in Northern Michigan that families with children will love.
3 Michigan has some great museums to educate and entertain you. Learn about the beginning of the auto industry at The Henry Ford. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in the U.P. honors the legend of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Petoskey’s Little Traverse Historical Museum details the life of Ernest Hemingway. The Michigan Historical Museum celebrates Michigan’s fascinating past.
4 If you think spring in Michigan is too chilly for outdoor fun, you can do it indoors at The Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit. Operated by the DNR, the OAC lets you sit around a campfire, fish from a boat and even walk behind a waterfall. Visitors learn about Michigan’s natural resources and outdoor recreation activities through hands-on exhibits. And it’s all inside a comfortable climate-controlled environment.
5 Opening March 25th, LegoLand Discovery Center at Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills is Michigan’s newest family attraction. A Lego factory tour, Lego City Play Zone and Kingdom Quest Laser Ride are just a few of the activities there. If you have a kid who’s crazy for Lego, they’ll love this place that’s overflowing with little plastic bricks. They can even get building tips from Lego experts to help them create their next Lego masterpiece.
6 You’ll also find The Michigan Sea Life Aquarium at Great Lakes Crossing. 5,000 sea creatures are on view. Walk through an underwater ocean tunnel, get up close and personal with a sea urchin in the Interactive Pool and watch as they feed the sharks. A discounted ticket package that includes admission to both the aquarium and LegoLand is available online.
7 If you’re a baseball fan who has been waiting for Opening Day since the World Series ended in October, you can spend part of your spring break at Comerica Park. The Tigers kickoff their home opener on April 8th. Get some peanuts and Cracker Jacks and watch the Boys of Summer run the bases.
