June 16, 2017

Father’s Day is this weekend, and it’s not always easy to know how to celebrate with Dear Old Dad. If you’re still looking for ideas, here are seven ways to show dad some love in Michigan this Father’s Day.

1. Go to a Tigers game – Take Dad out to the old ballgame at Comerica Park to see the Detroit Tigers take the field. The Tigers face off against the Rays with the first pitch at 1:10. In honor of Father’s Day, all the dads in attendance get  a pair of argyle Tigers socks.

2. Charter a fishing boat on Lake Michigan – Charter a boat and take Dad fishing out on Lake Michigan. Your catch-of-the-day might include everything from walleye to lake trout to salmon. Fishing charter companies take care of most of the details, including all the gear you need. And the knowledgeable captain will know how to find fish that are biting.fishing_lake_michigan

3. Take a Camping Trip – If Dad likes the outdoors, take him on a camping trip. There are so many options when it come to choosing a campsite in Michigan. If you want a truly memorable experience, go with a rustic tent site in one of our many state forests. Sitting around the campfire in the woods is the perfect way to have some special bonding time with Dad.

4. Have a Michigan Beer – Does Dad enjoy a fine craft beer? Michigan-made craft beer took off in the past decade. We’re the eighth largest producer in the country, with over 200 individual breweries. Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Traverse City all offer beer tours where you and Dad can try out all the local flavors.

5. Go to the Rodeo – You might not expect to find cowboys way up in the Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but every June a little bit of the Wild West come to Lake Superior’s Shores during the Great Lakes Rodeo. Barrel racing and bull riding are just two of the many traditional rodeo events you’ll see Father’s Day weekend at the Marquette County Fairgrounds. Dads get in free on Sunday.

6. See some classic cars – If Dad likes old cars, take him to Olds Homecoming, the  world’s largest one-day Oldsmobile car show at the Auto Owners Insurance Complex in Lansing on the day before Father’s Day, June 17th. This year’s event is celebrating the 50th anniversary of all 1967 Oldsmobiles. You’ll also get to see a Curved Dash Oldsmobile, the first mass-produced American automobile. Lansing is the original home of the iconic American Oldsmobile brand. The event is free to attend.

7. Take a train ride – All aboard! You and Dad can enjoy pizza while riding on the Old Road Dinner Train this Father’s Day in Blissfield. You’ll eat in a traditional dining rail car while enjoying the scenery of southeast Michigan’s rich farmland along a segment of the original Erie and Kalamazoo rail line. Reservations are recommended.
