Ski Northern Michigan this Winter

November 19, 2015

Ski Northern MichiganDid you know Michigan ranks second in the country for the number of ski areas state-wide? Some of the best are located right here in Northern Michigan. The first significant snowfall of the year is forecast for this weekend, which means the 2015-16 Ski season is about to get underway. It’s time to start planning your trip to the slopes up north!

Skiers and snowboarders are both at home at Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs where you’ll find Michigan’s longest ski run. They offer 55 downhill runs that are always groomed and maintained. From beginner to advanced, boarders will enjoy the five terrain parks, some of the best in the midwest.

But there’s more than skiing at the Highlands. Tubing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and fat tire biking are just a few of the other winter activities visitors can experience. Every Saturday, Kid’s Club provides indoor and outdoor fun for the children while Mom and Dad enjoy the resort on their own for a few hours.

With everything from traditional lodge rooms to condos to private homes, you’re sure to find accommodations that suit your taste. On-site restaurants offer plenty of dining options including casual cafeteria-style meals and fine dining served at the top of the mountain.

Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls says it’s the place to go if you’re looking for fun. They have 60 downhill ski runs, seven terrain parks and the country’s first six-person high-speed lift. New efficient snow-making guns will guarantee a deep base without relying on Mother Nature.

Beginner and advanced skiers and boarders of all ages can take advantage of customized lessons. If you enjoy competition, see how you fare in their ski racing program with events scheduled throughout the season. You can also try your hand at ice skating, ziplining and take a horse-drawn sleigh ride.

When you’re done skiing, warm up in the Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark where the temperature is always 84 degrees. The largest indoor waterpark in Michigan, it features six water slides, a hot tub, children’s pool and surf simulator. Solace Spa, named as one of the best in the world by Spa Magazine, provides a place for you to relax and pamper yourself. Rustic cabins, an Austrian themed hotel and luxury lodge accommodations provide a comfortable stay for everyone.

Nub’s Nob Ski Area in Harbor Springs has won awards for having The Midwest’s Best Snow. They have 53 ski slopes and three separate peaks. The highest vertical drop is 427 feet, the longest runs is ⅞ of a mile, they have three terrain parks and 97 percent of their 248 acres is covered by snow making. Popular special events throughout the season include the K2 Banked Slalom, Nub’s Nob Open and the annual Mardi Gras celebration.

Nub’s Nob Cafeteria and Nub’s Pub provide nourishment to keep your energy up while you hit the slopes. On-site lodging isn’t available, but accommodations in Petoskey and Harbor Springs are within easy driving distance.
