Summer in the City in the Mitten
There’s no doubt Michigan is the place to be in the summer if you enjoy outdoor activities like fishing, kayaking, and hiking. The lakes, streams and woods make it a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. But if you prefer skyscrapers over trees, there’s plenty to enjoy in Michigan’s cities in the summer also.
Detroit – The Motor City went through some difficult years, but Michigan’s largest city is on the rise again. For designer labels, shop at the swanky Somerset “Collection.” They say it’s too nice to be called a mall. Families will enjoy the Detroit Zoo, Sea Life Aquarium Michigan and historic exhibits at Greenfield Village. Music is still alive and well in the home of Motown with live concerts in the city throughout the summer. Sports fans can take in a Tiger’s game at Comerica Park. If you do want to spend some time outdoors, you can fish, boat and swim in beautiful Lake St. Clair.
Ann Arbor – Home to the University of Michigan, in the summer Ann Arbor’s famous farmer’s markets are open. People come from miles and miles to purchase the fresh fruits and vegetables and artisan foods available. With a thriving cultural scene, the city also hosts several art fairs throughout the summer, and you’ll find live music and theater events all season long. Don’t forget to visit the beautiful U of M campus while you’re there.
Grand Rapids – A rising star on Michigan’s art scene, Grand Rapids is home to two world-class art museums and an art school. They end the summer season with a 2 ½ week long art festival called Art Prize which features the works of over 1,000 artists. GR also holds the title of Beer City U.S.A., and boasts 15 craft breweries, including the well-known Founders. You’re also just 30 minutes away from sun and surf at a beautiful Lake Michigan beach.
Traverse City – This Northern Michigan city sits right on Lake Michigan. It offers upscale resorts, fine dining and shopping. Wine aficionados will especially enjoy the over 40 wineries and tasting rooms in the area. It also offers many opportunities to enjoy the lake shore. The incredible views of the bay are well worth the visit. It’s also not far from other popular Michigan summer destinations such as Petoskey and Mackinac Island.
Marquette – Marquette is the largest city in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Escape the heat of summer and enjoy the small town atmosphere. The city rests on the southern shore of Lake Superior, among a unique landscape of hills and rocks carved by ancient glaciers. Don’t let this city’s small size fool you. You’ll find luxurious resorts, art galleries and restaurants surrounded by the clear blue water. You may even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights while you’re there.
