Summertime Fun with the Kids

May 7, 2014

Fun, affordable activities to do with your kids this summer! A guest post written by Michigan blogger, Heather of Mommy’s Favorite Things. A busy mother of three kids under the age of 7 who loves to do as many activities as possible in the summer with her children to make the most of the warm weather and sunshine!

Here are four of her favorite summertime activities:

1. GOING TO THE ZOO

This one is a must have for my family. We buy a zoo membership (cheapest way, hands down) and go as often as we want when the weather is nice. We usually buy our membership in April or May and we go very frequently through September. It’s good for a whole year, so we can usually visit a few times the following March/April/May until it expires. For the Detroit Zoo for my family, the membership is $79 for a year. For us to go to the zoo just ONE time without the membership would be $54 ($14 per adult, $10 each for my 2 kids of age and $6 for parking). So if we go twice we’ve gotten our money’s worth! It’s so fun to go and watch the amazement in your kids eyes as they see the animals over and over again, it’s always a new experience!

2. CAMPING
You cant go wrong with camping, it’s usually very affordable and is a great time to spend family time together. For camping with a tent a campsite ranges from about $13/night to $30/night on average here in MI. So for no more than $60 to rent their site for a weekend is SO worth it to spend that family time together.
3. BONFIRES
Along with camping goes bonfires, a crucial part of summer. It’s easy to make a bonfire on a campground, but you can also do one in your own backyard. And Grandpa Shorter’s Sweet Sticks are perfect for this! They are ceramic handled and are reusable time and time again, they’re also perfect for hot dogs!
4. GOING TO THE PARK
This is the best of all because it’s FREE (most the time), you can’t go wrong with that! My kids enjoy spending HOURS at the park, even if we go a couple times a week. It’s a great way for them to get rid of their energy and have some fun with other kids too. We go to George George Memorial Park here in Clinton Township MI and I love it so much! They have 3 separate play areas for kids of different ages, not only that they also have areas set up for pictures with benches, as well as a pavilion and a nice pathway perfect for walking or biking that passes over the Clinton River. It’s such a pretty little trail!
