Ten Winter Date Ideas for Valentine's Day in MichiganValentine’s Day is right around the corner. Here in Michigan it’s usually cold and snowy on Cupid’s holiday. If you’re looking for alternatives to dinner and a movie, here are some romantic winter date ideas you can enjoy with your special someone.

1. Dog Sledding – If you’re a couple who craves adventure, take a dog sled ride. You’ll learn to mush your own team and see the amazing beauty of winter from a whole new perspective. A few places offering dog sledding in Michigan: S & L Arctic K9’s Dog Sled Adventures in Cadillac, Nature’s Kennel in McMillian and Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs.

2. Take in a Hockey Game – So maybe not everyone thinks romance when they hear the word hockey. But if your significant other is a fan, you’re sure to score major points by taking them out for a night at the ice arena. Even if you don’t have a local professional ice hockey team, there’s probably a university team nearby.

3. Cooking Class – Heat things up with a couples’ cooking class. You’ll enjoy each other’s company while learning how to make a new dish. It’s great for bonding, and you get to eat the delicious meal you whip up. Local restaurants and community centers often offer cooking classes.

4. Indoor Golf – Love to golf together, but the snow outside is too deep? Head to an indoor golf course where virtual simulators allow you to play famous courses all over the world from Augusta to St. Andrews. Winter practice will keep your game in top shape for the spring thaw. Try The Traverse City Golf Center.

5. Theater – Spend a night out on the town by taking in a live theater show. It’s a nice change of pace from the movie theater. Civic theaters, art centers and universities put on stage shows throughout the year.

6. Bowling – Bowling makes for a fun night, and the perfect activity for a double date. With many now offering gourmet menus, craft beer and even live entertainment, it’s not your grandma’s bowling league anymore.

7. Sleigh Ride – There is nothing more romantic than a couple snuggled up together in a horse-drawn sleigh while the snow and stars sparkle around them. Thunder Bay Resort in Hillman takes you on a sleigh ride to view the local elk herd, then delivers you to the lodge for a gourmet meal.

8. Moonlight Snowshoeing – Take a moonlit winter snowshoe hike through the woods. The beautiful scenery and peaceful setting are sure to inspire love. Many state parks around Michigan offer nighttime snowshoe hikes in the winter.

9. Ice Skating – Ice skating is another winter activity that oozes romance. Hold hands as you glide across the ice in sync. Afterward you can warm up with hot chocolate and a cuddle. Several communities have their own outdoor rinks like the Winter Sports Park in Petoskey.

10. Indoor Picnic with Fireplace S’mores – Is it too cold, and you’d rather just stay in? Have an indoor picnic in front of the fireplace. For dessert roast marshmallows over the fire to make winter S’mores.
