West Coast Shorter Wife – My husband has a mistress

December 3, 2014

My husband has a mistress - tails of the hunter's wife.

One day it just hit me like a ton of bricks.  My husband has a mistress.  He even has a second home, well, trailer, for this lusty relationship.  It really did not come out until well into the marriage that this was something that he desired. But, I have actually come to terms with it and he doesn’t know this but it is one of the reasons I love him.  When our son is old enough (or if we ever have a daughter) he will teach him his ways and I am excited for that.

Well if you haven’t figured it out by now my husband’s mistress is – hunting.

Hunting tails a family tradition

It’s in his blood.  He is a 6th generation Petoskey, Michigan native and hunter.  So much so that when he was born he was gifted an antique shot gun with a gold trigger by a family friend.  That gun is for bird hunting I was informed, but you get the idea.  When our son Carl was born that same family friend sent him a youth bow.

Well, I didn’t realize it at first but I grew up as a hunter too.  Born and raised in Seattle, Washington I became a pro at stalking my prey, taking the shot and I never miss – never ever.

So here are my favorite kills of the season.

Trophy #1 FAMILY PHOTOS: These are a must on my list every year and I have a deal with my husband.  If he has his time with his mistress then he has to wear whatever I want him to, smile pretty and behave for the photos.  He takes this very seriously and this year he even got his Ford Bronco running for the photos as requested.  The Bronco was an old love affair for him.

Trophy #2 MIRROR: This one I spotted in at 300 yards and I am in love with it.  I got this while out with my mother-in-law, Mari, in Wenatchee, Washington while our men were out hunting.  It is amazing how a mirror can change the look of a whole room.

Trophy #3 TRAYS: I am in love with trays of all shapes and sizes.  They help you consolidate items while displaying them – another Mari tip.

Trophy #4 FRAMES: So excited about these gold frames.  They are gorgeous and are a fantastic gift too.  Mine are from JW Shorter & Son Mercantile.

Trophy # 5 FEATHER TREE:  I can’t get enough of this table-top sized feather tree from Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts.  It is the perfect item for any credenza, side board, center piece or child’s room and the list goes on.  Plus, it is a very special keepsake.

Minnetonka Moccasins

Trophy #6 Minnetonka Moccasins: You just cannot go wrong with moccasins for the whole family.  The slippers are fantastic too.  These are a must have holiday gift or just for yourself.  Of course they are available at trusty Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts.

I want you to know that I share a lot of items that I use from Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts, JW Shorter’s and Trapper’s Cabin but I must say it has nothing to do with my last name.  I was just lucky to marry into this family of retail geniuses.  Petoskey, Michigan is very lucky to have such world class gift stores to shop at.  I literally have dreams throughout the year of shopping these stores and when I finally get there I fill the back of my mother-in-law’s SUV every trip.

I have shopped all over the country, as it is my addiction, and nothing can even come close.

So hats off to all you ladies with hunting husbands.  It took me a long time to understand it and I am still learning to. Please do remember that while hunting season is going on your own season is just starting.  So holster those credit cards and get ready to aim.  It’s ok to practice too 🙂

Until next time,

Alex Shorter
