Winter Pet Care Tips

I love animals. Big animals, little animals, any animals. I just love them all! I grew up on a farm and I had cats, dogs, geese, horses and more. I could often be found outside taking care of my animals year round. Now that I have my own family we are dog lovers. Well, I’m a dog lover! My husband grew up with dogs and I know he loves ours but I’m sure he’d be just as happy having a pet-less home. Me on the other hand? Give me ALL the animals!

Winter Pet Care Tips

We currently own two german shorthaired pointers. One is almost 13 years young and she’s my crabby old lady. The youngest is only 5 months old and currently larger than crabby older sister. During the winter months my old lady is content staying inside most days and sleeping the day away while little sister LOVES playing outside and running through the woods.

With this winter being harsher than usual northern Michigan has gotten dumped on when it comes to snow. The temperatures have also been much colder than usual. Most pets love being outside year round but when winter hits it’s important to take a few extra precautions for your 4 legged friends!

Winter Pet Care Tips

  1. Know your pets limits. Some dogs love being outside in the cold whereas others are much more susceptible to the cold. My younger dog can stay outside for almost an hour whereas my old lady can only stand to be outside for 10-15 minutes max.
  2. Wipe their paws. Taking your 4 legged friend for winter walks? If you walk your dog in more urban areas with salt and de-icers, make sure you wipe their feet after your walk. You don’t walk your pet licking their paws and getting sick from ice melts and other chemicals. You can always go one step further and purchase booties for your dog. Ruff Life Outfitters has you covered for all your 4 legged friends needs!
  3. If your pet does stay outside during the winter months routinely check their water dishes to make sure they are not frozen. Use plastic water and food bowls and make sure to give your pets more food during the winter months. Pets use more energy in the winter time trying to keep warm and need the extra calories to make up for it. Also make sure their home is elevated a few inches from the ground, insulated and line the inside floor with straw and/or cedar shavings. If you can, try to cover the door with waterproof burlap or plastic to protect them from the elements.
