Hi everyone, Halloween is over (can you believe it?), and we are quickly moving into hunting season here in Northern Michigan. It has been bow season for over a month now and my husband is often out baiting the deer, checking his trail cam with our seven year old or sitting in his blind waiting for that elusive buck to walk in.

Sunday November 15th marks the opening day of rifle season here in Michigan and a majority of our significant others that hunt, often travel north to deer camp. It’s a Michigan tradition and my husband goes every year, rain or shine. He has yet to miss a week at deer camp, over the last 12 years, where they eat, drink and sleep hunting and bagging a buck. Many ladies, like myself, enjoy this time off and try to find some fun activities to do with the girlfriends while our significant other is out of town for a few days.

Friday, November 13th from 5-10pm is the perfect evening to spend with girlfriends in downtown Petoskey participating in the Ladies Opening Night Bags Over Bucks event. This interactive yearly downtown event boasts over 32 unique downtown Petoskey businesses and is a great time to get away for the weekend with a few girlfriends and get an early start on some Christmas shopping for friends and family or a little something for yourself!

Start the evening out at one of our local brewery’s such as Beard’s, or try a new cocktail at Tap 30 (the Moscow Mule is my favorite). Shop the downtown businesses from 5-8pm and then head over to the Stafford’s Perry Hotel at 8:30pm for Ladies Deer Camp where you can show your receipts from participating stores and win prizes and gift certificates from local downtown businesses.

Last year over 32 businesses participated in the event, each offering a variety of goodies such as appetizers, in-store prize drawings, beverages, games and in-store specials.

While checking out each local downtown business, make sure to stop into Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts, as it’s always a super fun stop on the list. Last year they had a photo booth set up with Carlos the bear (I love Carlos!), gift certificate drawing and snacks. After stopping by Grandpa Shorter’s walk a few doors up the block and stop into J.W. Shorter & Son Mercantile for a gift certificate drawing, unique gift ideas and coffee. Each store is fun to take your time and browse the unique product offerings.

Drive north for the weekend or simply come for the day and make an evening of it. The Bags Over Bucks event will sure to be fun for anyone wanting to shop downtown Petoskey this holiday season.
